I find a nice balanced Capoeira-focused work out helps a lot. Start off with ginga until you sweat (to get the muscles warm) and then try some combos. We're newbies so we stick to a combo like: Skiva, negativa, role. What I've found is the more you practise these, the easier OTHER moves become to do because you're working all your muscles as you do this.

Dumbbells are boring to me but some nice Capoeira moves repeated to Capoeira music on loop - that's fun AND effective!

Very good article. I have been doing Capoeira for just over 2 months now, and starting to gain the strength and flexibility to do more each class. Its amazing, in the space of a week, I went from being a 'deer caught in headlights' in the Roda (ie trying to think to much what im meant to do) to actually playing the game reflexively and gaining more confidence. I think what u said about the interaction in the roda is correct.Once you stop thinking about what you want to do and just let it flow in response to what your partner is doing, it becomes more natural.

I've been feeling a little down with my performance in capoeira even though my prof keeps telling me I'm improving, and at one point, I even broke down, thinking that as much as I love capoeira I didn't seem to do any good in it, so much so that I felt like a huge failure.

But these past few days (as well as this article!) helped turned things around. Plus, how can anyone resist from capoeira for too long?

Hope you'll keep on writing articles like this! There aren't much sites on how to stay fit/improve for capoeira this time around.
