Simple Yet Beautiful Ground Movement Combination

chan, over at Soul Capoeira, posted a great little combination that I wanted to share with all of you.

The beauty of this combo is that it uses simple movements to create really beautiful, fluid, and impressive motion.

Make sure you go check out his post, because he gives some tips on the individual movements and progression of the combination that are definitely worth reading to get a better idea of what is going on.  Ground movement combination.

Now, go out and practice!  Especially if you live in New England where it is finally starting to get warm!

Capoeira Video: Kyokushin vs Capoeira

The title of this post (and video) is misleading.  And that’s on purpose…

I think that people spend way too much time arguing about which martial art is better.

If you look through the comments on a capoeira video on YouTube you will see people who can do nothing but argue about how much capoeira sucks in a fight and how it’s worthless. Many times, people from other styles put down capoeiristas and ridicule us just because our style is different or because we “wouldn’t be able to win an MMA fight” (which isn’t true by the way, but I’ll save that for another post).

So it is very refreshing to come across a video like this:

This is a video from Russia (at least I think it’s Russia, the alphabet certainly looks Russian, though I don’t read or speak the language) where Kyokushin practitioners are getting a lesson from some capoeiristas.

Kyokushin kaikan is a style that combines traditional karate with elements from kickboxing and boxing, for full contact fighting (with no pads used).

The video demonstrates one of the most cliche sayings ever used, “why can’t we all just get along.” But even though the saying is corny, the meaning is important. And I think it’s great to see two styles coming together and learning from each other, instead of arguing about who is better.

Capoeira Commercials Part 2

Bahia-Capoeira Blog has posted part 2 of their Capoeira Commercials series. If you missed the first part, you can check it out here.

There are some in here that I have never seen before, so it’s cool to see some new stuff.

I would have to say that my favorite of this bunch is a tie between the Kaiser ad (because it has some of my favorite things: capoeira, soccer, and beer; though I’m almost positive the soccer ball is CGI in some of the shots), and the Indonesian cigarette ad (why they’re using capoeira to sell cigarettes is beyond me). Runner up is the Motorola Razr 2 ad because it’s just plain sexy and stylish.

What do you think?

Capoeira Commercials

The Bahia-Capoeira Blog just made a post about capoeira commercials that I think you’ll all enjoy.

Some of these are better than others (and I don’t think that one guy is actually under water, but the effects are nice) but they’re all pretty cool. I know there are more commercials than this out there (and Bahia-Capoeira Blog calls this Part 1), just like the Nike ad I posted about a while ago.

I like the LoveCapoeira one the best, those color changing effects are cool. The one with the water bottle contest is up there as well.

What’s your favorite commercial?

Capoeira Video: Great Capoeira Bloopers

So I’ve decided to follow up the video I posted yesterday with a full video of capoeira bloopers (some of these are really funny because you can feel their sense of “oops” in the jogos and such).

There are a lot of other blooper videos on YouTube if you look around, but I thought this one was too good not to share.

Thanks Pipoca!

Don’t Do Capoeira In The House!

I was just checking out Capoeira Connection (they have a new and improved look to the site, I really like it, and there is some great information there if you haven’t checked it out before) and I came across an article called Best Capoeira on YouTube.

I honestly thought it would be the best capoeira, but after you watch a few of the clips you’ll notice that it’s truly the worst capoeira they could find.

How surprised was I, then, to find that I was among these “best of the worst” clips!?

That’s right folks, here in all of my awkward capoeira beginner hilarious glory, is yours truly.

And yes, that is a berimbau that I managed to knock off the wall so it could hit me in the face.  Notice the surprised look and expletive before I started to laugh my butt off at the end.

Am I embarrassed by the video?  Not really, because I decided to post it on YouTube.  I did it in part because I wanted it to take off and be one of those funny internet memes, but I knew it would never really get that big.

And I also posted it because I’m not afraid to show people how goofy I was when I first started capoeira (this is from like.. 2000 or so).

But let it be a lesson to you all, don’t try to do aus on your elbows in a small room in your house.
